in the hearing. in 2000 an overwhelming majority of senators sent a letter to president clinton reaffirming our solidarity with israel. i was one of them who carried that letter around, i remember it well and senator hagel is one of just four who refused to sign that letter, and i'm sure he'll want to comment about that. in 2001 he was one of just two senators who voted against a bill extending harsh sanctions against iran, a year later he urged the bush administration to support iran's membership in the world trade organization. senator hagel voted against a resolution designating iran's revolutionary guard corps a group responsible for killing american soldiers in iraq and afghanistan as a terrorist organization. on multiple occasions he advocated for direct negotiations with iran, a regime that continues to repress its people, doggedly pursue a nuclear weapon capability and employee terrorist proxies including hamas, hezbollah threaten the security of israel and the region. senator hagel has been an outspoken supporter of the nuclear disarmament and the global zero movement. we're sensitive

clinton. william cohen will replace kerry until an election in june. that probably won't happen to chuck hagel. his confirmation hearing to replace defense secretary leon panetta begins today and his biggest critics will be his fellow republicans. susan mcginnis is in washington with the latest. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. chuck hagel will not get the smooth ride that john kerry did. they even called him ents from anti-israel to anti-gay to anti-green. this is the first time he addresses those criticisms at a hearing that is critical to whether he becomes the next secretary of defense. chuck naegele, a former republican senator from nebraska should not expect a friendly reception on capitol hill this morning. >> president obama should choose someone else to lead the pentagon. >> reporter: he laid out the case on wednesday saying hagel is tough on israel, soft on iran. >> he simply does not understand the true basis of the u.s./israel alliance and he's the same person who suggests united states might be able to live with a nuclear iran. >> some well funded groups hav

clinton who finished up the speech here a few moments ago. he says something has to be done saying the problems in washington and the growing national debt posed a threat to the american economy. >> we have a few years here to make sure we an economic policy in america that gives capital to everybody who needs it. gives education to everybody who needs it and can use it and invest in the future as well as the past. >> wall street project is dealing with economic problems the reverend jackson wants to focus on pension funds. he's calling it a new pension fund loan program for american cities that he says will boost the economy and help lower the unemployment rate. take a look at the amount of assets and pension funds right now just over $7 trillion. about half of the domestic stocks and international stocks only 6.5 percent in real estate less in other investments. the reverend jackson told us the money to invest is there. >> they can limit reconstruction. i am convinced the large body of money to make use of that would be a portion of pension fund minus the bill and infrastructure
